Angina Management Programme

The Angina Management Programme (AMP) is an NHS service for people with angina.

The programme will provide you with personalised information and advice about your heart condition to help reduce your symptoms and as a result, improve your quality of life.

We do this by….

  • Increasing your understanding of your heart condition so you think differently about angina
  • Helping to reduce the fear and worry angina may cause
  • Showing you simple ways to control your symptoms and do more
  • Explaining how to get the most from the medications and treatments on offer
  • Helping you feel able to make informed and shared decisions about your care
  • Reducing the need for hospital admissions and interventions

The people most likely to benefit from the programme are those who:

  • Would like to learn more about angina
  • Get frequent episodes of angina despite usual treatments
  • Are frightened or worried about their angina
  • Often need to call 999 when their angina is bad
  • Are considering a stent or bypass to improve symptom control

How does the programme work?

Following a referral from your doctor or nurse you will be invited for an initial appointment with our clinical team. We allow 2 hours for this, so we can talk openly in a relaxed setting without feeling rushed.

We will provide you with information about your heart condition in a simple but detailed way and answer any questions you may have.

This is followed by 4 small group sessions where we build on what you have learned and show you how thinking differently about angina, using simple relaxation techniques and making healthy lifestyle choices can help you control your symptoms, feel better and live longer.
There is an individual follow up after 3 months and a group review after 12 months.
We encourage you to bring along a family member or friend if you wish
